STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE, MANKATO MINN.
OCT. 1928

For their graduation picture, Oscar and a friend started at the top left (your left) of the bleachers.  They knew how the camera rotated its film as it scanned the field of students left to right.  After they were captured on the left, they jumped down and ran over to the spots they had reserved on the top right (your right) of the bleachers.
HOW TO FIND OSCAR TWICE IN THIS PANORAMIC GRADUATION PHOTO:

(1)   IN THE LEFT SEGMENT LOOK FOR THE TALLEST MAN FURTHEST LEFT IN THE THE TOP ROW.   HE IS FRAMED AGAINST THE BRICK WALL BETWEEN TWO SETS OF 2-FRAME WINDOWS.

(2)  IN THE RIGHT PHOTO LOOK FOR THE TALLEST MAN FURTHEST RIGHT IN THE TOP ROW.  HE IS FRAMED AGAINST THE CORNER OF THE BUILDING BETWEEN TWO SETS OF WINDOWS.
Oscar is as somber as can be on both sides. Now what about his shorter friend?  In the left photo, his friend's head is only partially visible to Oscar's left, perched behind two women's heads.  In the right photo, the friend, now to Oscar's right is laughing hard and trying to maintain his balance. As a result, his head almost completely visible now, is blurry due to his frolicsome movement.

So you see, it is much more than just a class photo. It is a characterization of Oscar's humor and personality to pull a stunt like this. Oscar was a legend in his own time for his humor and ingenuity.
This photo is uniquely historic for other than its humor. Oscar J. Lubke is the only member of this class of 1928 with three years at Mankato.  He would remain in the school for another year and in 1929 became the first four year graduate of the college. The college is known today as Minnesota State University, Mankato.
