This
issue of LIFE magazine came out on November 17, 1941, just three weeks
before Pearl Harbor.
It features some members of the University of Texas Football Team on
it's cover. Inside, more
photos include team member "Hoot" Watkins. Only
two weeks earlier, on November 3, 1941, James H. (Tid) Watkin's,
"Hoot" Watkins' brother, and a cadet at West Point, was the
subject of his very own LIFE
cover, November 3, 1941. "This
made for much talk at the barber shop run by the Watkins' father in
a small Texas town, and according to Tid's son, right after Pearl Harbor,
most of the University of Texas football team went out and joined the
Marines. It is stories like this that make me proud to be
an American."
-- Bob Kellman (Editor's note: Photos were researched, and scanned by Bob Kellman, ex-New Cadet, Class of 1963, West Point. The photo stories were written by Bob from his conversations with Watkins' family members.) |
